How do I know if I need counseling?

Many people think that something must be seriously wrong before going to counseling. This is a common misconception. Counseling can be an incredibly useful tool for sorting through many of life’s issues and problems, both positive and negative.
If you are struggling with something, you should try not to have things come to a breaking point before reaching out for support. It is true that counselors can help you when you are having a crisis. That said, seeking support in advance of a crisis can be a much more effective way to solve problems.

Think about it this way, counseling is a way you can take care of your mental health, just as you would take care of your physical health. Counseling can help you keep a watchful eye on how you are coping with the challenges of everyday life. It is a sign of strength – and not of weakness – to take care of yourself if you are feeling some emotional distress in your life. Just venting can be cathartic.

Know this. Counseling does not have to only be about the negative things that are going on in your life. You can use it as a judgment-free space to talk to someone about what is on your mind. It is an invaluable experience to be both heard and validated so you can learn more about yourself. So, if you are sitting on the fence, try reaching out sooner than later. Your emotional well-being is important.
